“Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.”
If you haven’t noticed it’s becoming harder and harder to stand firm in our faith. In a culture that is becoming more hostile towards one another, it seems that the Christian is left out on the margins. Like the small boy who sits alone in a big cafeteria there seems to be no place for the Christian to sit. One side thinks you are a bigot and too conservative while the other considers you a lib and too inclusive. Thus the Christian is left to wonder where he stands.
Brothers and sisters welcome to the Christian experience for the last two thousand years. We have always been on the margins, always persecuted, and always the kid who is considered an outcast. Jesus himself said, “If the world hates you, understand that it hated me first.” And John said, “Do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you.”
So why are we surprised?
As the Apostle Paul said, “Take up the whole armor of God… and stand firm.” This has been the call to the Christian. Stand firm in Jesus. Put on the whole armor of God, which is found in Jesus alone. He is the only firm, unchanging, unshakable foundation in the world. Everything else is subject to change, but Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Amen.
So, when adversity comes (and it will come). Turn to Christ and put your hope in him. Remember the shield of faith, the belt of truth, the helmet of salvation which are found in Jesus. And through all things HE will be able to make you stand firm.
