Behind the song (Soldier)

“I will win, because God is on my side. I’m a solder”

There is always a story behind a song. David, when he wrote his Psalms, wrote them out of the experiences of his life. Gods people always sang (and still sing) about what the Lord has done for them and what He continues to do. There is always a story behind a song, because God is always behind the story.

“Soldier” was written because Alex, a close friend of mine, had decided to join the military. At the time it was not an easy decision, as nobody that we really knew had made that decision yet, and it was a very difficult decision. But his decision made me think back to Ephesians 6, where the Apostle Paul calls on the people of God to “put on the whole armor of God.”

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” (Ephesians 6:13 ESV)

The image that Paul creates is one of a soldier who standing firm in the face of a battle. There is a true spiritual battle, and if you have been a Christian for more than five minutes you probably know the battle. It is a battle for truth, righteousness, faith, and for the gospel. The thing about this battle is that it is more internal than it is external. The only way to win this battle is to put on the whole armor of God, which is Jesus.

Jesus is the truth. Jesus gives us his righteousness. Jesus gives us salvation. Jesus is the whole armor. This is why we can be confident and sing “I will win, because God is on my side.” Our confidence is not in ourselves and our ability, it is in Jesus and what He has already done. God is on our side and so we can be faithful and stand firm in the face of the battle.

Think about it, if the almighty God is for you, who can be against you? What can move you if you are standing firm in Jesus?

There is no sin, no sickness, no disease, no financial problem that will be able to overpower the grace of God in Jesus. Our biggest need was solved when Jesus reconciled us to God. Sin and death were defeated and now we live forever in relationship with God. Whatever battle you might be facing at the moment and whatever struggle you may be dealing with, know that Jesus has overcome and by His strength you are able to overcome.

Carry on…  Soldier.
